The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-based supersonic twin-engine, two-seat fighter aircraft with a dual tail and variable-sweep wings, capable of flying in all weather conditions. The Tomcat was developed for the U.S. Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the failure of the General Dynamics-Grumman F-111B project. The F-14 is a large and well-equipped fighter, the first of the American Teen Series fighters, developed with lessons learned from air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War. The F-14 made its maiden flight on December 21, 1970, and first deployed in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the Navy's primary naval air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical aircraft. In the 2000s, the Tomcat was used as a reconnaissance platform. In the 1990s, the Low-Altitude Targeting and Navigation (LANTIRN) pod system was added, and the Tomcat began performing precision ground attack missions. The Tomcat was retired from the US Navy on September 22, 2006, and was replaced by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Several decommissioned F-14s are on public display across the US.
